How to cancel subscriptions you forgot about: a step-by-step checklist
Cancel where you are billed, a day before renewal, and keep proof. Step by step for iPhone, Android, PayPal, Amazon and direct plans.
To cancel a subscription you forgot about, first work out who bills you, because that’s where you cancel: Apple or Google for plans started in an app, Amazon or PayPal if they take the payment, and the service’s own account page for everything else. Cancel at least a day before the renewal date and keep the confirmation until the next statement is clean.

Step 1: find out who actually bills you
The name on your statement tells you where to cancel. Cancelling anywhere else often does nothing: a service’s website usually can’t see a subscription you bought through Apple, and the App Store can’t touch one you pay for on a website.
| Your statement shows | Where to cancel |
|---|---|
| Apple or APPLE.COM/BILL | iPhone Settings, your name, Subscriptions |
| Google followed by an app name | Google Play, Payments & subscriptions |
| PayPal followed by a merchant | The service’s account page, then PayPal |
| Amazon or a Prime channel | Amazon, Memberships & Subscriptions |
| The service’s own name | The account or billing page on its website |
If the name on the statement means nothing to you, search for the exact text together with the amount. Many services bill under a parent company or payment provider name, and this guide decodes the common ones.
How to cancel a subscription on iPhone
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap the subscription, then Cancel Subscription.
If there’s no cancel button, the subscription is already cancelled and won’t renew, and the screen shows the date it ends. If you can’t find it in the list at all, check that you’re signed in with the right Apple Account: the subscription may sit on an old account or on a family member’s. On a Mac, Apple TV or Windows PC, follow the steps for each Apple device.
How to cancel a subscription on Android
- Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Choose the subscription, tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
You normally keep access until the end of the period you’ve already paid for. Uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription.
How to cancel automatic payments on PayPal
With PayPal there are two jobs. Cancel inside the service first, so you don’t owe it anything, then remove its permission in PayPal so it can’t charge you again:
- In PayPal, open Settings, then Payments.
- Select Manage automatic payments.
- Choose the merchant and cancel its automatic payments.
If the service still thinks you’re subscribed, a blocked payment doesn’t end the contract. It may keep trying to charge you or mark your account as unpaid. Always cancel with the service as well.
Amazon memberships and channels
Open Your Account, then Memberships & Subscriptions. It lists Prime, Prime Video channels and other plans billed through Amazon, each with its own settings to end it. Channels are easy to miss because they’re added inside the video app and then billed quietly every month.
Subscriptions you pay for directly
For everything else, cancel on the service’s own website, usually under Account, Billing, Plan or Membership. If you can’t find it:
- Search the service’s help pages for “cancel subscription”.
- Try the website rather than the app: some services only let you cancel in a browser.
- Contact support and ask for written confirmation of the cancellation and the end date.
- In Germany, sites that sell subscriptions online have had to show a clear cancel button since July 2022, so check the footer and account menu.
Gyms, phone contracts and some newspapers have notice periods. Check yours now, so you know the real last day you can cancel without paying for another cycle.
Step 2: time it right
Most services let you use what you’ve paid for until the period ends, so there’s rarely a reason to wait. Cancel as soon as you decide, and no later than a day before the renewal date: charges are often taken in the early hours, sometimes in another time zone.
What waiting costs on a plan you no longer use
On a €79.99 yearly plan, missing the renewal by one day costs the whole €79.99 at once.
Step 3: keep proof and check the next statement
- Screenshot the confirmation screen or save the confirmation email.
- Write down the end date it gives you.
- On the old renewal date, check your statement. If you’re charged anyway, send the confirmation to support and ask for a refund. Here’s who to ask, and how.
- Still stuck? Your bank can help. Many banks let you block a merchant, and in the EU you can ask your bank to refund a SEPA direct debit within eight weeks of the date it was taken.
Common mistakes
- Deleting the app. It doesn’t touch the subscription, which keeps renewing.
- Cancelling in the wrong place. If Apple bills you, cancelling on the service’s website may change nothing.
- Blocking the card instead of cancelling. The contract stays open, and a replacement card can sometimes be updated automatically for merchants you pay regularly.
- Not checking the next statement. A cancellation that didn’t go through is only caught by looking.
- Forgetting trials. A trial you meant to stop is a subscription from its first charge. See how to stop free trials from charging you.
Never forget one again
The reason forgotten subscriptions happen is timing: you only think about them when the charge lands, which is too late. A reminder a few days before each renewal turns every one into a quick keep or cancel decision.
Billbase never logs in to your accounts or cancels on your behalf. It makes sure you know in time, and keeps the full list in one place. If you haven’t made that list yet, start with how to find all your subscriptions.
Frequently asked questions
Will I get a refund if I cancel a subscription mid-month?
Usually not, but you normally keep access until the end of the period you paid for. Some services refund on request, so it’s worth asking support.
Can my bank cancel a subscription for me?
Your bank can block a merchant or stop a recurring payment, but that doesn’t end your contract. Cancel with the service too, so it doesn’t chase you for unpaid charges.
Why can’t I find a subscription in my iPhone settings?
It’s probably billed somewhere else, such as Google Play, PayPal or the service’s website, or it sits on another Apple Account. The name on your statement shows who charges you.
How do I get a refund for an App Store subscription?
Apple takes refund requests for App Store purchases at reportaproblem.apple.com. Sign in, find the charge and choose a reason. Refunds are not guaranteed.
What if a service charges me after I cancelled?
Send support your cancellation confirmation and ask for a refund. If they refuse, your bank or card provider may be able to dispute the charge.
