How to get a refund for a subscription you forgot to cancel

Ask the service first, then Apple, Google Play, PayPal or your bank. Your rights in the EU and UK, and a short message you can adapt.

Billbase teaminfo@billbase.app
Short answer

To get a refund for a subscription that renewed before you cancelled, cancel it first, then ask whoever billed you as soon as possible: the service itself, Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, or Google Play within 48 hours of the charge. For a renewal you agreed to and simply forgot, a refund is usually goodwill rather than a legal right, so ask quickly, say you haven’t used it and keep it short. If you were charged after cancelling, or never agreed to the charge at all, your bank, card provider or PayPal can step in.

Step 1: cancel first, so it can’t charge you again

A refund is easier to grant when the subscription is already cancelled. Cancel where you’re billed and screenshot the confirmation. If you’re not sure where that is, this checklist shows where to cancel for every common case, and there’s a separate guide to cancelling Apple subscriptions on each device.

Cancelling doesn’t refund anything by itself: you usually keep access until the paid period ends, and the refund is a separate request.

Who to ask for a refund

Ask whoever took the money. The name on your statement tells you who that is, and if it makes no sense, here’s how to decode it.

You were billed byWhere to askGood to know
The service itselfIts help or billing page, or supportIts own refund policy applies, plus your legal rights
Apple (APPLE.COM/BILL)reportaproblem.apple.comApple usually updates you within 24 to 48 hours

Ask in order: the service, then the store that billed you, and only then your bank or card provider.

How to ask a service for a refund

  1. Cancel first and keep the confirmation.
  2. Find the support form or billing email, usually under Help, Account or Billing.
  3. Give the facts in two or three lines: the date, the amount, that you’ve cancelled and that you haven’t used the new period.
  4. Ask for something specific: a full refund of the renewal, or a partial refund for the unused months on a yearly plan.
  5. Keep the reply. If they say no, you have a record for the next step.
A message you can adapt

Hello, my subscription renewed on 2 October for €79.99. I meant to cancel before the renewal and have now cancelled it. I haven’t used the service since it renewed. Could you refund the renewal, please? Thank you.

Speed matters more than wording. A request the day after a renewal, with no use since, is the easiest one to say yes to.

A short request with the date, the amount, proof you’ve cancelled and a clear ask gets the quickest answers.

How to get a refund from Apple

For anything billed by Apple, including subscriptions you started inside an app on iPhone or iPad:

  1. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with the Apple Account that was charged.
  2. Choose I’d like to, then Request a refund.
  3. Choose the reason, then Next.
  4. Choose the subscription, then Submit.

Apple says to expect an update within 24 to 48 hours. If you can’t see the charge, search your email for “receipt from Apple” to find which Apple Account made it; Family Sharing organisers can choose All in the account menu. Eligibility varies by country, and Apple’s refund page has the details.

How to get a refund from Google Play

Google says it doesn’t give refunds for most Google Play purchases, with exceptions:

  • Within 48 hours of the charge, you may be able to get a refund through Google Play’s own refund request, depending on the purchase.
  • After 48 hours, contact the app’s developer. Their contact details are on the app’s page in Google Play, under App support. Developers refund according to their own policies and the law.
  • For a charge nobody in your household made, report it to Google as unauthorised within 120 days.

Partial refunds for a cancelled subscription are only offered in a few countries, so for a yearly plan it’s worth asking the developer directly. Google Play’s refund policy lists the current rules.

PayPal: stop the payments, then dispute

PayPal can stop future payments and help with a payment that went wrong, but it can’t cancel your agreement with the service. Do both:

  1. Cancel with the service and ask it for the refund first.
  2. In PayPal, go to Settings, then Payments, then Automatic payments (or Subscriptions and saved businesses), choose the merchant and cancel.
  3. If the service won’t help, open a dispute in the Resolution Centre: choose Report a problem, then the payment and a reason, such as a billing error.
  4. Escalate it to a claim if you can’t agree. A dispute closes after 20 days unless escalated, and can’t be reopened.

A dispute is for a payment taken after you cancelled, or one you didn’t agree to. For a renewal you agreed to and forgot, ask the service for goodwill instead.

Your bank or card provider: the last step

Direct debits in the EU

Under the SEPA direct debit rules you can ask your bank to refund a direct debit within eight weeks of the date it was taken, without giving a reason. If the company can’t show a valid mandate, the limit is 13 months. Your bank reverses the payment, but you may still owe the company under your contract.

Card payments and chargebacks

A chargeback asks your card provider to reverse a card payment, for example when you were charged after cancelling. Card schemes set the time limits, often 120 days from the payment, so ask early and send your cancellation proof. In the UK, you can also tell your bank or card provider to stop a recurring card payment, and it has to stop it. If it lets a payment through after you asked, Citizens Advice says you’re entitled to your money back.

Blocking a payment doesn’t end the contract

Stopping or reversing a payment doesn’t cancel the subscription. If the service still thinks you’re a customer, it may keep billing you or chase the debt. Always cancel with the service too.

What the law says in the EU and UK

  • The 14-day right of withdrawal (EU). For contracts made online, you can usually withdraw within 14 days without a reason. For services, the 14 days start the day you agreed to the contract, and the trader must refund you within 14 days of being told. See Your Europe for the rules.
  • Digital content and services you started straight away. You lose the right for streaming or downloads once they start, if you expressly agreed to that. If you asked a service to start during the 14 days and then withdraw, you pay for what you used, in proportion to the full price.
  • A withdrawal button, since 19 June 2026. EU traders that sell contracts through a website or app must now offer an online withdrawal function, labelled along the lines of “withdraw from contract here”, and confirm your withdrawal on a durable medium such as email.
  • Renewals are less clear. The withdrawal right is about new contracts, and whether an automatic renewal starts a fresh 14 days isn’t settled the same way everywhere. Your national consumer centre can tell you how it works where you live.
  • Germany. For contracts made since 1 March 2022, once the minimum term is over, an automatic renewal must run month to month and can be cancelled with at most one month’s notice.
  • UK. You have a similar 14-day cancellation right for contracts made online. New UK subscription rules, including a cooling-off period when a free trial turns into a paid plan and on some longer renewals, written renewal reminders and an easy online exit, are expected to apply from spring 2027.

Worked example: why asking fast pays

Here’s what one person got back after noticing two renewals they’d meant to cancel, by asking within three days.

Worked example

Two forgotten renewals, refund requested the same week

Photo app, yearly plan, renewed yesterdayRefunded by the store€79.99
Streaming service, monthly, renewed 3 days agoRefunded by support€12.99
Gym, notice period missedRefunds not offered€0.00
Total refunded€92.98

Asked a month later, the yearly plan is a much harder case: a month of access has been used, and the store or developer may offer nothing.

How to never need a refund again

Refunds are a repair job. The real fix is knowing about each renewal a few days before it happens, while cancelling still costs nothing.

Billbase works from the subscriptions you add, or from a bank statement PDF or CSV you drop in and review before anything is saved, in every currency. With Pro, you can ask Billy, its AI analyst, “what renews in the next 30 days?” and decide before anything is charged. If free trials are what usually catch you, read how to stop free trials from charging you.

TakeawayCancel first, ask fast, ask where you were billed, and keep the bank for when you weren’t heard.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund for a subscription I forgot to cancel?

Sometimes. Many services and app stores refund a renewal you haven’t used if you ask within a few days, but for a charge you agreed to it’s usually goodwill rather than a legal right.

How do I get a refund for an Apple subscription?

Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, choose I’d like to, then Request a refund, and pick the reason and the subscription. Apple usually replies within 24 to 48 hours.

How long do I have to ask Google Play for a refund?

Google Play’s own refund request is for the first 48 hours after a charge. After that, contact the app’s developer, whose details are under App support on the app’s page.

Can my bank reverse a subscription payment?

Often. In the EU you can ask for a SEPA direct debit to be refunded within eight weeks, and card payments can be disputed through a chargeback. Neither cancels the subscription itself.

Should I use a chargeback for a renewal I forgot?

Only as a last resort. A chargeback is meant for payments taken after you cancelled or that you never agreed to. For a renewal you forgot, ask the service or the store first.
